Saint-Germain dates from the sixth century when it was a country village surrounding a wealthy abbey. Today it is lively and fashionable district on the left bank of the Seine River. Along its narrow streets where private 18th century mansions stand close to more recent buildings, this district combines the oldest church in Paris with luxury shops, popular markets, and famous cafés and art galleries. Historically it was important during the French Revolution and the Treaty of Paris, which formally ended the American Revolution, was signed here in 1783.
Saint-Germain des Prés became an intellectual centre of Paris in the 1950s. Your guide will lead you through this authentic Parisian area where philosophers, writers, musicians, artists have lived and mingled: Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, but also Ernest Hemingway, Jacques Prévert or Miles Davis!
